**Here's an interesting announcement from the
Hamfesters' RC 'Hamgab' Newsletter: "Dig out your 220 radios and dust
them off. In early December 2009 Chicago FM Club created a "220
Preservation Net.". The goal was to protect our access to the remaining
portions of the 1.25M Amateur Radio band. The net is held on the CFMC
north 220 machine on 224.100. The machine is carrier access. No PL is
required. The net will is run each Saturday evening at 2000 hours sharp.
Please spread the word. This is the first and only 220 net in this
area...". I've been around long enough to have used 220 when it was
220. My first radio for the band was a couple of VHF Engineering boards
shoehorned in a gutted old mobile CB. Remember 'activity nights'?
Remember the FCC giving Novice class licensees access to 220 and our
hopes of populating it and scaring UPS away? Remember K9XI's 220 Notes?
Many of the new tri- and quad-band HTs have 222, although at reduced
output. There is also at least one new mobile for 222. This band could
sure use a resurgence.
