POTA Outing – 11/2/2024

Archive

We’re still on for POTA at Illinois Beach State Park this Saturday at 10:00ish.

The park number for POTA is US-1000. If you haven’t already done so, register with POTA. Once you have your free account set up, you may be pleasantly surprised at how many POTA contacts you already have. The person at the park, the Activator, is the only person who submits the log. The folks (robot) at Parks On The Air do all of the cross-referencing and it’s retroactive! You may already have some POTA contacts and not even know it. As far as logging and using the POTA app, (for lack of a better description), you can use your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

The red arrow indicates the approach from Wadsworth Road. Follow around through the park, past the Illinois Beach Hotel. Once you’re on the straightaway we will set up shop on the left, (west), side of the road in one of the picnic groves. If you get to the giant parking lot, you missed us, (or you’re way too early, lol). The red circle is where we set up.

I think the online maps are current, but if not, Sheridan Rd immediately south of Wadsworth Rd is completely closed for bridge reconstruction.

If you’re going to take the Tollway and use Russell Rd, that is quite an overshoot. Don’t be fooled by the first IBSP entrance you come to, (across the street from 5 Star Firearms and at the Elks Lodge), because that is the entrance to the North Unit of the park. The Wadsworth Rd. entrance is at the south end of Zion. McDonald’s, Casey’s, Popey’s, Culver’s, and Wendy’s are all within a block of that entrance.

Here’s a pic of a few of the 8 CFMC members that came out and activated the park. Most of us brought tri-band HT’s to QSO on simplex park-to-park 😉
